Our Church History

The rich history of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church dates back to 1867, when it was first organized in a small house at "Old Dick’s Place" along Highway 147. On November 30, 1877, the congregation purchased land at its current location for $7 and worshipped under a Bush Arbor before constructing a church in 1882. Through the years, Mount Sinai endured three devastating fires but remained steadfast, rebuilding each time. In 1927, the congregation moved into its present building, which has since undergone multiple renovations and expansions.

The church played a vital role in education, operating Ridge Grove School on its grounds until 1952. Over the decades, significant milestones included the construction of a new Fellowship Hall (2003–2006), sanctuary renovations (2011–2012), and the establishment of key ministries, including a nursery (2011), Children’s Church (2023), and a Food Pantry Ministry (2022) in partnership with the East Alabama Food Bank.

Baptismal traditions have also evolved. Initially held in a natural water source, a pool was built in 1936, followed by a baptistery installation in 1992. Baptisms now take place on the first and fourth Sundays of each month,
while the Lord’s Supper is served on the first Sunday of each month.

Mount Sinai transitioned to full-time worship in 1985 and has been led by nineteen pastors. Rev. Walter J. Jones retired in 2019 after 40 years of dedicated service. On May 30, 2021, Rev. Veryl Dion Gilbert was installed as the nineteenth pastor, leading the church into a new era of growth. Under his leadership, the church paid off its mortgage (2023), completed parking lot renovations (2023), and ordained two new Deacons (2024).

Today, Mount Sinai has over 200 active members, with eight Deacons serving as church officers.
For 157 years, this church has remained a steadfast pillar of faith, worship, and service, continuing to write new chapters in its enduring legacy.
